Root Canal Therapy

While Dr. Vito performs routine endodontic procedures, there are times where Dr. Vito will refer out to a root canal specialist called an endodontist. Endodontists are dentists who specialize in maintaining teeth through endodontic therapy. Such procedures involve the soft inner tissue of the teeth, called the pulp. Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal procedure involves opening the tooth, removing the damaged pulp, cleaning, shaping, filling and sealing the tooth.

Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

During your second appointment, the material is removed and replaced with a permanent material (and then a temporary material or crown is placed on the top portion of the tooth or crown).

Root Canal Pain

Often times, people may be afraid to have a root canal because of the anticipation of pain. It’s important to understand that the actual procedure is painless. A local anesthetic numbs the tooth and the surrounding area. The pain that a person feels is usually caused by the infection of the tooth, not by root canal treatment. Root canal therapy helps a patient to preserve the health of their teeth by removing the source of inflammation.
