Root Canal Therapy

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected either through dental decay, dental disease or trauma. While Dr. Vito performs routine endodontic procedures, there are times where Dr. Vito will refer out to a root canal specialist called an endodontist. Endodontists are dentists who specialize in endodontic therapy.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal procedure involves opening the tooth, removing the damaged pulp, cleaning, shaping, filling the tooth with gutta percha , a vulcanized rubber, and sealing the tooth with a dental restoration or placing a post for a crown restoration

Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form jeopardizing the underlying bone, surrounding anatomic structures as well as the adjacent teeth. Most root canals can be performed in one appointment and can be done more efficiently with Dr. Vito’s Fotona Laser

Root Canal Therapy Recovery

Sometimes due to the nature of the root canal infection you may require a second appointment to complete the root canal procedure. During the time between the first and second appointment you may be placed on an antibitiotic to assist in the resolution of the dental infection. At that time a permanent filling or a temporary crown is placed.

Root Canal Pain

Often times, people may be afraid to have a root canal because of the anticipation of pain. It’s important to understand that the actual procedure is painless. A local anesthetic numbs the tooth and the surrounding area. The pain that a person feels is usually caused by the infection of the tooth, not by root canal treatment. Root canal therapy helps a patient to preserve the health of their teeth by removing the source of inflammation.
